Organic Mattresses: Going Green While You Sleep
If you’re trying to live a more “green” lifestyle, you may have already done things like cutting out plastic, recycling, and buying an electric car. All of those things are great! But you may not have thought about your sleeping arrangements.
Unfortunately, most mattresses out there are made from unsustainable materials, emit toxic VOCs (Volatile Organic Compound) that are bad for your health, and need to be replaced often, requiring more resources and creating more pollution. (Gross)
But, thankfully, there are several companies out there making it possible for us to sleep soundly knowing you are not compromising your health OR the planet to do so.
But, if you’re committed to getting an organic mattress, you’ll want to be on the lookout for brands that advertise mattress as “eco-friendly” or “natural” but are actually made of chemical-based materials. Some even claim to use “sustainable manufacturing processes” without actually going into detail about how the mattresses are made.
Luckily, I’ve created a short list of mattresses that are organic and eco-friendly without any of the confusing and misleading verbiage.
Suite Sleep
Created by Angela Owen, Suite Sleep uses sustainable and local materials to make their mattresses. The company uses locally sourced wool from family farms who use organic and humane standards. They also use imported organic latex from Sri Lanka and organic cotton. Suite Sleep can be found in hotels around the world!
Holy Lamb Organics
Holy Co-I mean Lamb! This company was featured in Oprah Magazine and on ABC World News. They use organic cotton, natural and organic wool, and all-natural latex to make their mattresses. They offer options based on your preferences of how you would like your mattress made. For example, you can choose between natural and organic wool from New Zealand, all natural premium eco wool from small sheep ranches in the US, or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified wool.
WJ Southard
This company dates back to 1915. They use organic cotton, their own special blend of organic and pure wool, natural latex, recycled steel, and Canadian spruce to make their mattresses. Awesome, eh? Say goodbye to chemical flame retardants, pesticides, herbicides and harmful dyes.
Ergovea
Ergovea uses natural rubber latex sustainable harvested from tropical rubber trees. They also use organic cotton. Both the latex and the cotton have been certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (contains no harmful chemicals). They also use an interesting natural flame retardant: sand. But don’t let that put you off, this bed is super comfortable. It’s also passed the Greenguard Gold emissions test!
These are JUST A FEW of the many companies out there committed to providing a green way to sleep. If you want to look for more but aren’t sure how to find companies that are actually organic, remember to look for mattresses that are GOTS and GOTL certified.
